What is Registered Kinesiology
Kinesiology is the scientific study of human movement, performance and function. The practice of kinesiology incorporates the sciences of biomechanics, anatomy and physiology, and considers neuroscience and psychosocial factors. Registered Kinesiologists (R.Kin) are recognized by some insurance company policies and can qualify for reimbursement, or can also quality for out-of pocket expenses on your annual tax return (see CRA or accountant for more information). Please be sure to check your coverage for R.Kin and reach out to your insurance company with any questions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How Do I know if I need treatment with Rob
A: If you have an acute or chronic injury, are looking to improve your strength training, help prevent injury, or you are training for a specific sport and need some help, Kinesiology could be for you! Rob will use a comprehensive, holistic approach, addressing injury, movement, and lifestyle factors to help you feel and perform at your best.
Q: How Do I know if I have coverage for Registered Kinesiology?
A: With your insurance policy you should have a breakdown of what paramedical coverage you have, and it will list "Registered Kinesiology" or "R.Kin". If you aren't sure, please check with your insurance provider. If not covered by insurance, Registered Kinesiology can be claimed under "Health Expenses" on your taxes!
Q: When would I need Kinesiology vs Massage?
A: It comes down to your goals and intent for your treatment, and is very dependent on your and your goals. There is a lot of overlap in treatment tools and techniques, especially since Heather (Rivers RMT) has a background in studying Kinesiology. However Massage Therapy at Rivers RMT uses more passive and hands on manual therapy, by prioritizing relaxing your nervous system in order to address dysfunctions. Kinesiology includes more of an active approach from the clients perspective, that is similar to the approach physiotherapists use. Rob plans to take a holistic wellness approach as well, to see you as the complex and wonderful human being that you are. Using these services in combination can be extremely beneficial to reach your goals.
Q: Do I need a doctor's note or referral?
A: That is only determined through your insurance provider. Please check with your provider for more information. Therefore, if you do not have extended health insurance, then the answer is no, you do not need a doctor's note.
Q: Can Heather/Nicole book my appointments with Rob for me?
A: No. Rob will be functioning as his own stand alone business, similar to how Nicole and I currently work together. We will be working in a collaborative office share, and will support each other as independent practitioners. We of course may have a lot of overlapping clients, but if you are looking to book appointments or have questions specific to services provided, please reach out directly to each practitioner.
Q: Heather, you have a Kinesiology Degree, what is the difference?
A: Registered Kinesiology, just like Registered Massage Therapy, is a protected, trademark term. A Registered Kinesiologist (R. Kin) is required to have a very deep understanding of the human body and exercise as it relates to health and wellness, and is guided by an evidence and experience based approach. Rob's experience working with different populations, from youth to older adults, as well as recreational to professional athletes has built a strong foundation of knowledge and critical thinking to help the individuals he works with, through exercise and non- exercise modalities. I have studied Kinesiology however I have not completed the necessary examination process and payment of fees required to call myself a Registered Kinesiologist. I therefore, cannot bill or portray myself as an R.Kin. I do bring a lot of my knowledge and experience from my studies into my care as an RMT, but I cannot be referred to as an R.Kin. But guess who can - ROB!
