October 25-27th, 2020
Once a year we, Registered Massage Therapists, have a week dedicated to bringing awareness to our profession. This week is supported by the Registered Massage Therapists Association of Ontario (RMTAO) and their focus for 2020 is on how RMTs have been instrumental during this pivotal time dealing with COVID-19. I wanted to also take a moment to discuss why Massage Therapy can be a great complementary modality to your current health and wellness treatment plan.
I am a firm believer that Massage Therapy should be scheduled consistently into your life, and thought of as a long term or even life long commitment. Yes, that is a bold statement, and yes I do recognize my bias of my benefit of that being an RMT. However, I have felt this same way even before I was an RMT. Massage Therapy can have immense positive impact on your quality of life, as it can:
Stress, burnout, anxiety, depression relief/reduction
Reduce muscle tension and pain
Reduce severity and frequency of headaches and migraines
Reduce chronic pain and improve quality of life
Support Fitness training and status
Help improve state of relaxation to help improve sleep
Support stages of prenatal, postnatal and fertility journey
Support healing through acute, chronic and post-operative injuries
Support through grief, loss or times of transition
So much more!
We all may at some point in our lives experience a number of the above scenarios, and massage therapists can help form a treatment plan with you as you move through these seasons. Massage Therapy is often perceived as a reactionary form of care, meaning you only go for treatment if you are in pain or injured. This is were I like to step in, as this is a common misconception as it should be viewed as proactive care as well. RMTs have the unique ability to help reduce pain or tension before it starts, possibly detect changes in conditions and reduce stress before it turns into burn out. Using MT proactively will reinforce the brain to take the relaxation experience off the table and into your every day life. So if you are someone who isn’t sure Massage Therapy is right for you or if you “qualify” to be a patient of massage therapy, the answer is yes! You deserve to make time for your health.
